New Zealand Car Rental Information
Driving Licences
Overseas visitors can drive in New Zealand if they have a current overseas driver’s licence or a current international driver’s permit. These are valid for one year after first arriving in the country.
All drivers must carry their licence when driving.
If the overseas licence or permit is not in English it is suggested that an official translation (a translation from an official source, e.g. a translation service or language centre) accompany the licence.
For further information about international driver license use in NZ, visit the NZTA website.
Rental Duration
We operate on a 24 hour charge period + 2 hours grace.
eg. with pick up at 9am January 1, for a 10 day hire you must return before 11am January 11.
Inter-island Touring
If you intend touring both islands, we typically offer vehicle exchange at the ferry terminals to save vehicle transportation fees.
You leave your first vehicle on one island and another vehicle will be provided on the opposite side of the strait.
Your second or subsequent vehicle must be picked-up within 5 hours of finalising the previous hire.
Minimum hire periods apply in each island for this service.
Customers can organise their own passenger ferry crossing tickets.
We recommend Bluebridge or Interislander.
Special rental deals
At certain times of the year, we run specials on a particular vehicle class, usually for one way or relocation hires - please enquire for details.
Special deals are typically available on one way hires from Christchurch to Auckland throughout the year (minimum hire length may apply).
Insurance information
Comprehensive insurance coverage - details may differ depending on pickup city and vehicle type.
Typically 2 excess or deductable levels exist:
- Single car accident (where no other vehicles are involved in the accident)
- Standard car accident (all other cases)
Often additional insurance or Crash Damage Waiver (CDW) as a daily fee will be offered as a way to decrease your liability in the event of an accident.
Some pickup locations have different insurance details for drivers under 25 or 21.
Pick-up and drop-off (transfer services)
We offer transfer services between our depots and most local airports, city or airport area accommodation providers, rail and ferry terminals.
FREE transfer services are available from many pick-up locations during business hours.
Please enquire to see if transfer service is available for your arrival or departure location.
Maps & Guides
Most depots have FREE maps, travel guides and accommodation guides.
Safety and reliability
- 0800 toll free number for peace of mind while you travel.
- Regularly serviced and maintained vehicles.
Baby and child safety seats
Most depots hire baby safety seats for NZ$35 and child booster seats for NZ$25. Hire any 2 for just NZ$50. (this is a one-off fee, not a daily charge)
If your baby requires a capsule, we suggest Baby-on-the-move, Baby Sunshine or Plunket
