Top 5 reasons to hire a 4WD in New Zealand
Safety - Larger vehicles are always safer in an accident. Large 4x4 SUV style vehicles give better view and command of the road increasing safety. You have more chance of avoiding upcoming hazards if you can see what's up ahead. |
Traction - 4wd vehicles give much better tire traction on loose road surfaces, snow and ice. This significantly decreases the possibility of getting stuck. |
Comfort - The larger 4wd vehicles give a fantastic ride comfort and higher viewing position above the road. This will make your journey more enjoyable and memorable.
Mid-size 4wd vehicles such as the Toyota RAV4 are typically easier for less mobile people to get into and out of. |
Space - A well designed 4x4 suv such as the Toyota Landcruiser prado has wide body giving ample seating space and easily sufficient luggage space for most travellers. |
Appearance - Lets face it, a tidy 4x4 out classes most if not all sedans or station wagons on the road. A 4x4 also looks good in the holiday pics you show your friends. |

Important points for driving a 4wd vehicle
4WD or 4x4 doesn't mean you can drive faster than a regular car. 4WD improves your SUV or wagon's traction on slippery or lose surfaces from a stationary position. The tyres of a 4x4 won't necessarily grip the pavement any better when you brake (particularly when braking at speed).
Some basics about how a 4WD or 4x4 vehicle works ...
In the ideal case, a 4wd vehicle will send as much torque as possible to each wheel without causing the wheel to slip.
The maximum amount of torque for each wheel is determined not by the availablilty of power from the engine, but by the traction on each tyre. The more weight on each tyre, the greater traction (or friction) at that tyre.
When
turning, traction will be greater on the outside wheels.
When
accelerating, traction will be greater on the rear wheels.
When
braking, traction will be greater on the front wheels.
There are numerous different implementations and types of 4WD vehicles available. Two names for common implementions are AWD (all-wheel-drive) and 4WD (4-wheel-drive).
All-wheel-drive - Typically referrs to a full-time system. Most AWD systems cannot be turned off. AWD seems to be the more common system used in smaller modern 4WD vehicles.
4-wheel-drive - Typically referrs to a part-time system. The system is typically switched by locking hub switches. Some newer vehicles have the ability to turn off 4WD from within the vehicle. Turning off 4WD saves wear and tear + fuel economy when 4WD is not required.
